INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS DISCIPLESHIP?

The process of learning about the teachings of another, internalising them and then acting on them.

• One who embraces and assists in spreading the teaching of another
• Any follower of any other person
• A follower of the doctrines of a teacher or a school of thought
• One who receives initiation from a spiritual master and then follows the path shown by the master
• Follower, student, supporter, pupil, convert, believer, devotee, apostle
• Leader, teacher, master, guru

WHAT OR WHO IS A DISCIPLER?

One who disciples, mentors or teaches according to the doctrines of a teacher/ school of thought

WWHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE DISCIPLED?

It means to be mentored/taught according to the doctrines of a teacher/school of thought

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CALLED INTO CHRIST DISCIPLESHIP AND TO BE A CHRIST’S DISCIPLE?

• It means to be called into the teachings/doctrine, mentorship and lifestyle of Christ
• A follower of Christ who learns of Christ and lives what he has learnt of Christ as his lifestyle
• A pupil who is taught of Christ

WHO IS A DISCIPLE OF CHRIST?

ONE WHO IS A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST AND HIS DOCTRINE

  • Matthew 4:18-22
  • Luke 5: 10-11,28
  • Matthew 16:24
  • 2John9-11
  • John12: 26
  • Mark8: 34-38
  • 1John4:5-6

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work.

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

A true disciple of Christ is a true believer of Christ’s doctrine. He yields to Christ’s instructions, and shuns everything that contradicts his Lord’s faith. For a disciple to follow Christ, he would need to have spent time and time again with Him and in his presence in knowing him, taking time in studying His ways. He would need to follow his master spiritually, mentally, morally, socially and economically. In simplicity, a disciple of Christ follows Christ’s footsteps in every area of life.

To live a godly life in Christ we need to follow Christ in lifestyle through the meditation of His word- the wholesome words of God. It is when we have done this that we can manifest as His disciples. It is His Word that will light our path in following in His path, as His life is light unto us. Psalm119: 105; John1: 4 To follow after Christ is to follow His light to His lifestyle in order to be approved unto God as His disciples.

ONE WHO HEARS, UNDERSTANDS, RECEIVES AND ACTS ON WHAT HE HAS HEARD FROM CHRIST AND OF CHRIST

  • Luke 6:46-49
  • 1 John 4:5-6

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

The faith of a disciple comes by hearing, hearing by the Word of God. If you don’t give ear to His Word, you cannot understand His word; and if you cannot understand His Word, you cannot receive His Word; and if you cannot receive His Word, you will not be able to act on His Word.

To be identified with Jesus as His disciple, we would need to be familiar with His life. To be familiar with His life we would need to be familiar with His ways. For this to happen we would need to hear, understand, receive and act on His message as our way of life.

His Word says study and make yourself approved unto the Lord, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. 2Timothy2: 15. If we don’t study we cannot rightly divide the Word of Truth. And if we cannot rightly divide the Word of Truth, we would not be approved unto God. If that becomes the case, God would not approve us as His disciples. In other words He would not confirm our theology as His doctrine through signs and wonders following. Mark16: 15-18, 20. It is through the studying of His Word that our eyes of understanding is opened. If our eyes are not opened through the hearing of His Word, then we cannot be His disciples. Luke24: 45.

ONE WHO IS COMMITTED TO CHRIST’S DOCTRINE AND HIM ONLY

  • 1Corinthians3: 11
  • 1Timothy6: 3

11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

A doctrine is something that is taught; teachings collectively; a body of teachings relating to a particular subject or a principle advocated- according to dictionary.com definition.

God has doctrine, and this doctrine is manifested in Christ and through Christ alone. As Disciples of Christ we need to commit to His doctrine. And to commit to His doctrine we need to meditate on His doctrine day and night to maintain our discipleship in Him, with Him and through Him. Meditating and applying His commandments to our life make us to manifest as His disciples. We are not to take away from His doctrine neither are we to add to His doctrine, hence why we need to meditate day and night on His doctrine to maintain our lifestyle in His doctrine.

God and His Christ would only confirm their doctrine with signs and wonders. They would never confirm strange doctrine or another gospel because they are not the authors of it, and they are also not the authors of confusion. John7: 16-18.; Proverbs4: 2; 1Timothy6: 3-5

ONE WHO BELIEVES IN CHRIST’S TESTIMONY AND NEVER DOUBTS WHAT HE SAYS

  • John3: 31-34
  • Psalm19: 7

31 The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God[a] gives the Spirit without limit.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

A testimony is evidence in support of a fact or statement; proof; open declaration or profession, as of faith; the precepts of God; the Decalogue as inscribed on the two tables of the law, or the ark in which the tables are kept- according to dictionary.com definition.

We cannot operate as Christ’s disciples if we don’t believe in His testimony. If we doubted the commandments He gave to us, and the message from the Father including the works that the Father did through Christ, then we cannot be discipled by Him neither can we disciple for Him. If we do not truly believe in the wholesome words of Christ, we cannot be effective disciples for Him. Hence why we need to study and make ourselves approved unto God, so as to rightly divide the Word of Truth.

To believe in Christ’s testimony, you must understand His testimony and the authority that the testimony carries over any other. God’s testimony in Christ is sure and cannot be altered or interfered with. It is authentic and has the Father’s approval and stamp upon it. It must therefore be believed as wholesome words of God.

ONE WHO IS BORN OF THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST

  • Romans8: 2-17
  • 1 Corinthians 11:1
  • Philipians2: 5

2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you[a] free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin,[b] he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus[c] from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. 12 So then, brothers,[d] we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons[e] of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

If we are not born of the Spirit of Christ, we are not His. And if we are not His, we cannot be His disciples. When we are born of His Spirit, we crucify the flesh daily. When we are born of His Spirit we are led by the Spirit, we walk in the Spirit, we speak by the Spirit, we see by the Spirit and we hear by the Spirit. When we are born of the Spirit we obey His spiritual laws. A disciple must be born of the Spirit of Christ. It is the Spirit of Christ in us that quickens us to be like Christ in our inner man, and thereby outwardly. It is the Spirit of Christ in us that brings about the mind of Christ in us. The Spirit of Christ in us enables us to put the works of the flesh in us to death.

Without the Spirit of Christ in us, the Spirit cannot testify that we are His disciples through signs and wonders. And without His Spirit in us we cannot manifest the gifts of the Spirit, neither would we be able to live a holy and righteous life. A person that claims to be a disciple of Christ and does not manifest His Spirit can never be used as a vessel for Christ. It is the Spirit of Christ in us, through the Word, that cleanses and prepares us as temples to be indwelt by the Father and the Son.

ONE WHO OBEYS THE COMMANDMENTS OF CHRIST AND OF HE THAT SENT HIM

  • John14: 15,23-24

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

The commandments of God should be the binding authority on the disciples’ life or lifestyle. The wholesome words of God as the oracles of God should be the binding authority of a disciple’s life and lifestyle in his marriage, in his home, in his community, in his relationship, and in a nutshell, concerning every area of his life and relationship.

The test of the binding authority of Christ’s discipleship in a disciple’s life is based on the obedience of the disciples to our Lord Jesus Christ. If we that are called His disciples cannot or would not obey His commandments, then we cannot teach others to obey them. In this case we are definitely not His disciples. For a disciple is meant to keep the laws, commandments, precepts, ordinances and statutes of his Master faithfully, hence the word discipleship, before he can tell others to do so. The disciples are meant to live the commandments of God as their lifestyle to show that they are approved unto the Lord. Our Lord Jesus obeyed every commandment of His father as He told us in His Word. John15: 10.

ONE WHO KEEPS AND SEPARATES HIMSELF FROM THIS WORLD AND ITS POLLUTION

  • James4: 4
  • 1John2: 15-17
  • James1: 27
  • 2Tim2: 4

4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.

Though we are disciples living in this world, we are definitely not of this world. We have been redeemed from the systems of this world- its pollution and defilement. A disciple is to keep himself unspotted from the world. James1: 27. We are not, as disciples, to be easily yoked with the ways of this world and its carnality. A disciple who is still a friend of the world is definitely an enemy of God. You cannot make friends with God’s enemies or arch enemy, who is Satan-the god of this world, and expects him to be on your side or approve you as His disciple.
The lust of the flesh, the pride of the eye and of this world, should have nothing to do with the Disciples of Christ. As far as God is concerned, those things are accursed things before the Lord. They pollute the temple of God of which we are.

Romans12: 1-2 says we should not be conformed to this world. In other words we should not be conformed to the ways of life of this world, because this world’s ways of life are not God’s ways of life. A disciple of Christ is to separate himself or set himself apart from this world unto God. John17: 19 says our Lord Jesus also sanctified Himself for our sake. We need to sanctify ourselves from this world through His Word and Spirit as disciples for the Master’s use for His Glory.

ONE WHO IS NOT ONLY A HEARER OF HIS WORD BUT ALSO A DOER OF HIS WORD

  • James1: 22-25

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

The Word of God is a doing Word and not only hearing. The Word is to be heard, understood and done. Done in the sense of carrying out what the Word says we should do in our lives. How we hear the Word also affects how we do or carry out the instruction of the Word. Listening skills are very important when it comes to the hearing of the Word. A fleshly disciple cannot be Christ’s disciple because the Spirit of Christ will not retain Him or remain in Him. Such a one cannot engage or understand spiritual things or matters. Disciples of Christ must be trained by the Holy Spirit to hear and understand the Word in order to be able to carry out the Will of God as intended in the Word by the Word.

The Bible made us to understand that the people of the Lord perish because of lack of knowledge and understanding. Understanding the Word of God that we have heard is very important and crucial to our carrying them out. Hence the bible says we should study and make ourselves approved unto God, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

ONE WHO HAS CRUCIFIED THE FLESH –THE LUST AND PRIDE

  • Romans6: 5-8
  • Galatians2: 20
  • Galatians5: 24
  • Galatians6: 14
  • Colossians2: 11-13

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,

It is very clear in the bible that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God. A disciple has a task of winning the battle of the mind as well as overcoming the flesh and its desires. There is no other way to win this battle other than to kill the flesh and its desires.

A disciple is meant to be dead to his flesh- the lust of the eye, the pride of life, and the lust of the flesh. The works of the flesh must cease in him, if not the vessel cannot be of any use to Christ as a disciple. A carnal man cannot and will never be a disciple of Christ or engage in a sacred or spiritual work for Christ. The flesh can never please God. God rejects the works of the flesh. The bible makes this very clear to His disciples and us. This is why Jesus said we should count the cost before we embark on the journey of discipleship.

When we become His disciples, we don’t live for self anymore but for Christ. Disciples of Christ are dead to self. All our desires are sacrificed for His desires. In other words we chose to live for Him only. Disciples of Christ are sold out to Christ. Their passion are for Christ, and the passion or zeal for their Master eats them up.

ONE WHO IS A BONDSERVANT, BOND FRIEND AND BOND BROTHER OF CHRIST

  • Romans1: 1
  • Mark10: 28

1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”

A disciple of Christ is sold out to Christ, spirit, soul and body. He is subjected to Christ authority. Christ becomes the crown of authority over his head and life. He is totally submissive to Christ without question to the point of death. He yields to Christ faithfully and obey His commandments without reservation. He serves under Christ, and in Christ’s name the people.

A disciple of Christ bonds with Christ and would go through any reproach, persecution or tribulation for and in Christ. The Disciples of Christ humble themselves as unworthy servants of Christ after they have done what is expected of them. The disciples understand that the message of their Lord is more important than the messengers, and that the message outlives the messengers on earth from generation to generation. They also see Christ as their big brother and their bond friend. They see Christ as revealing the hidden things of the kingdom to them as brethren. They are bonded with Christ. This is why they would sacrifice all for His love.

ONE WHO HAS LAID DOWN HIS LIFE FOR CHRIST AND HIS BRETHREN

  • Matthew19: 27-30
  • Romans12: 1-2

27 Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?” 28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife[a] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.

12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

As disciples we are to lay down our lives for Christ, the brethren and the gospel. Whoever cannot deny himself for Christ, his brethren as well as the gospel can never be a disciple of Christ neither would he be able to function as one. Why? The reason being that discipleship in Christ is about laying down your life for the cause of Christ and the Kingdom. To be Christ like is to lay down your life for God’s cause just like the Master we follow did lay down His life for God’s cause. The test and demonstration of a true disciple love for his Christ, is to lay down his life for His cause. This is how we would be recognized as true Disciples of Christ on this earth and in heaven.

ONE WHO DWELLS IN HIS WORD AND IN HIS LOVE CONTINUOUSLY

  • Joshua1: 8
  • Psalm1: 1-3

8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

The food of true Disciples of Christ is the spiritual food of the Master. They feed on the Word of their Lord day and night. The Word of Christ is their comfort and consolation. They search the scriptures daily, meditating on the Word of God day and night. They love the Word and cannot live without the Word. The Word is their life and their life is the Word. They have set themselves apart for the Word, and in turn the Word has set them apart or sanctify them for His glory.

The Word of God and His Christ rule the life of the disciples. They see through His Word; they hear and judge by His Word; they speak His Word; and they walk in His Word. Everything they do is by the Word and through the Word. A true disciple of Christ cannot function without the Word of God. He prays the Word, lives the Word, eats the Word, and counsels and receives counsel through the Word. The Word testifies of them by bearing His fruit in them. For by their fruit we shall know them. Whatever the disciples do always prosper because they do it by the authority and power of Christ the Word.

ONE WHO DOES NOT DENY CHRIST BUT SHARE CHRIST THE WORD

  • John15: 27
  • Matthew10: 33
  • 2Timothy2: 12; 3:5
  • Titus1: 16

27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.

33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.

3 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules.

16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

The Disciples of Christ should preach and share Christ the Word in their daily life and affairs everywhere they go. The Word should become their lifestyle that they share with people on a daily basis.

The Disciples of Christ are sowers of the Word just like Christ in the parable of the sower. The disciples are called to sow the seed of the kingdom of God in words everywhere they go on planet earth. Mathew28: 19-20. We are to get the Will of God done on earth as it is in Heaven. This is the main job of a disciple of Christ. If this particular function is missing in our duties, then we have lost the overall objective and goal of our calling as disciples of His. Christ is the essence and centre of our faith, Christianity as well as discipleship. Without Christ there is no discipleship and there is no message of hope whatsoever. So for this very reason Christ is the reason disciples and discipleship exist.

If we denied Christ in our lifestyle, conversation and work, then we have denied the very Faith that gave birth to us spiritually as sons and daughters unto God. and once we have denied faith, we have denied every testimony of God through His Christ.

ONE WHO WORSHIPS IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH

  • John4: 23-24
  • Romans8: 8

3 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

ONE WHO DOES NOT FORSAKE FELLOWSHIP OF THE BRETHREN

  • Hebrews10: 24-25
  • Acts2: 42
  • 1John1: 7

24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

1 How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! 2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. 3 It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.

ONE WHO LOVES GOD WITH ALL HIS HEART, HIS SOUL, HIS MIND, AND HIS STRENGTH

  • Matthew22: 39
  • John14: 21
  • Mark1: 30

39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her.

ONE WHO LOVES HIS NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF

  • Matthew22: 39
  • 1John3: 10-12; 16-18
  • 1Peter4: 8
  • John15: 12

39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister. 11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.

16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

ONE WHO WINS AND DELIVERS SOULS FROM DARKNESS

  • James5: 20
  • 1Corinthians9: 19-22
  • Proverbs11: 30
  • Proverbs14: 25

20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.

30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

25 A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is deceitful.

ONE WHO RECEIVES THE KINGDOM OF GOD LIKE A CHILD

  • Mark10: 15
  • Matthew18: 3-5

15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

ONE WHOM THE FATHER AND THE SON DWELLS IN

  • John14: 23

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them

ONE WHO CONTENDS FOR THE FAITH

  • Jude3
  • Galations1: 6-10

3 Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.

6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse! 10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

ONE WHO FINDS PLEASURE IN BEING WITH CHRIST AND IN CHRIST

  • Psalm1: 1-3
  • Psalm37: 23
  • Psalm112: 1
  • Psalm16: 11

1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.

23 The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;

1 Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands.

11 You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

ONE WHO HAS A TEACHABLE AND HUMBLE SPIRIT

  • Isaiah66:2

2 Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?” declares the Lord. “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.

ONE WHO SUFFERS PERSECUTION FOR THE SAKE OF THE GOSPEL AND CHRIST

  • John15: 20
  • Matthew5: 11-12
  • 2Corinthians4: 8-12

20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

ONE WHO HAS THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

  • Galatians5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

ONE WHO GATHERS WITH CHRIST AND NOT SCATTER WHAT CHRIST GATHERS

  • Matthew12: 30

30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

ONE WHO IS AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART AND HAVE CHRIST’S MIND-SET

  • Philipians2: 5-8
  • Acts13: 22

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature[b] of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

ONE WHO IS BONDED WITH CHRIST BEYOND MEASURE

  • Philipians1: 21
  • Galatians2: 20
21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

ONE WHO IS PATIENT AND ENDURES LONG SUFFERING

  • James1: 2-4
  • 2Peter3: 9
  • Mathew5: 11-12. 44

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

ONE WHO BEARS GOOD FRUIT IN CHRIST

  • John15: 2, 8
  • Phillipians1: 9-11

2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful.

8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

ONE WHO IS A VESSEL OF HONOR FOR THE MASTER’S USE

  • 2Timothy2: 20-21

20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. 21 Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.

ONE WHO HAS A PURE HEART

  • Mathew5: 8
  • Psalm24: 3-5
  • Psalm51: 9-11
  • Proverbs16: 2
  • Phillipians2: 14-16
  • 1Timothy1: 5
  • James3: 17

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

3 Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.[a] 5 They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior.

9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

2 All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.

14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”[a] Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

ONE WHO LABOURS IN PRAYER

  • Colossians4: 12
  • Ephesians6: 18
  • 1Timothy2: 1
  • Romans15: 30

12 Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—

30 I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.

ONE WHO ENGAGES IN THE LABOUR OF LOVE

  • Hebrews6: 10
10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.

ONE WHO FORSAKES ALL FOR THE KINGDOM

  • Mathew19: 27-29
  • Luke18: 28-30
  • Luke14: 33

27 Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?” 28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife[a] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!” 29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”

33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.

ONE WHO PURSUES PEACE WITH ALL MEN

  • Hebrew12: 14
  • Psalm34: 14
  • Romans14: 19

14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

14 Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

ONE WHO FULLY EMBRACES AND ENGAGES IN THE MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION

  • 2Corinthians5: 17-21

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin[b] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

ONE WHO IS FULL OF FAITH

  • Hebrews11: 6
  • Acts6: 5-8

6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. 7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. 8 Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people.

ONE WHO SEEKS AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HOLINESS

  • Hebrews12: 14
  • Mathew6: 33
  • 2Peter2: 5
  • 2Corinthians7: 1
  • Romans8: 4
  • Luke6: 27-37

14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

5 if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;

7 Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven

ONE WHO SHOWS COMPASSION AND DEMONSTRATES GOD’S MERCY

  • Luke6: 36
  • Psalm103: 10
  • Mathew5: 7
  • Colossians3: 12-15

36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.

7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

ONE WHO FORGIVES

  • Mark11: 25
  • Luke17: 3-4

25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

3 So watch yourselves. “If your brother or sister[a] sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. 4 Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”

ONE WHO OVERCOMES EVIL WITH GOOD

  • Romans12: 20-21
  • Luke6: 27-37

20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

ONE WHO FEEDS OF AND ON CHRIST

  • John4: 31-34
  • 1corinthians3: 1-3
  • John6: 47-51

31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” 33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” 34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

3 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?

47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

ONE WHO STANDS IN THE GAP AS A WATCHMAN

  • Numbers14: 11-21
  • Ezekiel22: 30
  • Ezekiel33: 7-11
  • Ezekiel3: 17

11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.” 13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them. 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, Lord, are with these people and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath, so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’ 17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’ 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.” 20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the Lord fills the whole earth,

30 “I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.

7 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 8 When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for[a] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 9 But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so, they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved. 10 “Son of man, say to the Israelites, ‘This is what you are saying: “Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away because of[b] them. How then can we live?”’ 11 Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?’

17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.

ONE WHO SEEKS AFTER GOD’S JUSTICE AND COUNSEL

  • 2Timothy3: 16-17
  • Psalm19: 7-11

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. 11 By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

ONE WHO IS ZEALOUS FOR THE KINGDOM

  • John2: 17
  • Luke2: 49
  • Mathew6: 21

17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”

21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

ONE WHO IS ENDUED WITH THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

  • Luke24: 49
  • Acts2: 1-4

49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

ONE WHO HAS THE FEAR OF THE LORD

  • Proverbs8: 13
  • Proverbs14: 16, 26
  • Proverbs1: 7
  • Mathew10: 28

13 To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.

16 The wise fear the Lord and shun evil, but a fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure.

26 Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge.

7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
